REDUCE SWELLING & DISCOMFORT
LIPEDEMA V.S. LYMPHEDEMA
Lipedema is defined as a chronic medical condition where adipose (fat) builds up in the legs and arms. It is more challenging to diagnose.
-Common Symptoms: Varying degrees of pain, muscle fatigue, pain, easy bruising
Lymphedema typically only affects one side of the body, including the hands and feet. It can be diagnosed with imaging or genetic tests.
-Common Symptoms: Puffy/red skin, swelling, tight joints, arms/legs seem to be different sizes
Luckily, we treat BOTH!
WHAT WILL TREATMENT BE LIKE?
It is the job of physical therapists to help you regain function and movement due to effects of various conditions, and lymphedema/lipedema is no exception!
Patients will work closely with their therapist in developing a treatment plan that will best address swelling and other needs.
Treatment is often comprised of manual lymphatic drainage (feels like a light form of a massage) followed by compression bandaging or compression garments for lymphedema.
